Cohaerentia solution has been selected for the final of the EIT Digital Idea Challenge 2015 in the category “Cyber-Physical Systems“.
The final will be held on on 4 December in Paris, France, in front of a pan-European expert jury consisting of industry experts, investors, entrepreneurs and business accelerators.
The EIT Digital Idea Challenge is the networks’ contest to reach out, identify and support the best digital startups in Europe, that are focused on fast growth of their business in Europe and worldwide.

The LAFOS laboratory was born in 2014 from a joint idea of 4 research groups belonging to 4 departments (DMEC, DAER, DEIB, DICA), each working on very different application with the same technology: optical fiber sensors. Joining the technical competences was thus a natural and positive consequence. This laboratory is revealing fundamental in accelerating and acilitating the development of actual and new activities, thanks not only to the coagulation of the competences, but also thanks to the new instrumentation purchased by the laboratory.
The management committee is made up of: Prof. Ferruccio Resta (DMEC), Prof. Giuseppe Sala (DAER), Prof. Mario Martinelli (DEIB) and Prof. Francesco Ballio (DICA).

Abstract
Fiber optics for sensing
The optical fiber is not only an excellent information-carrying medium for telecommunication applications, but is also strongly attractive for sensing and control. Optical fibers are sensitive to many physical parameters against which they were made to be immune for their effective operation in telecommunication. The precise analysis of the linear and non-linear effects affecting the light propagating into the fiber allows developing a novel generation of pervasive and smart sensors. The panel will show two main application fields of optical fiber sensors together with the innovative approach proposed by the recently established Politecnico di Milano spin-off Cohaerentia. CommTech Talks @ POLIMI are a series of seminars and panels organized weekly by the study program in Telecommunications Engineering and the master of science track in Internet Engineering of Politecnico di Milano for stimulating the networking between students and people from industry and research.
